We Are More Than Surface
Judgment is as judgment does.
We see something or someone and come to a conclusion about the situation without knowing all of the details. Sometimes we’re intuitive enough to see what’s there without having to dig too deep and sometimes we’re so incredibly off base that it’s embarrassing. Often in our quest to make a judgment about someone—even ourselves—we think not about the context of the questions we ask, but rather the answer we hope to hear. Why? Because we have in our heads this notion of whom that person or what that situation is and it’s disappointing to consider something else. On the flip side, sometimes we’re on the receiving end of inquiries too bizarre or random for our own liking. Do we respond or do we react? Or do we stop for a moment to consider that there’s more to the question that we first thought?
All one can do is take a step back and breathe. Breathe and acknowledge that every one of us is so much more than the polished person (or sometimes not so polished person) we present to the world. We are more than our face, more than our situation, and more than the language with which we choose to express ourselves.
Consider the questions you’re asking of yourself and of others—whether they be on your yoga mat or in a conversation with someone. If your first instinct is to cast a blanket judgment, know that vision is sometimes obscured by that which is closest…you never know what might come from waiting a moment longer.
